Wire connectors are the mainstay of most electronic prototypes and then long after the prototype is finished they are also an integral part of the final electronic device. Take a Pocket PC powered phone for example. Wire connectors are used on the outside in the way of a USB connector and an audio jack but when you look inside the Pocket PC phone, that is where it gets interesting. there are all types of miniature wire connectors inside. linking the touch screen to the motherboard, or the lcd screen to the motherboard, both of which are removable and connect a multitude of wires.
So if you are looking to connect two wires or even one wire to a device on a semi permanent basis then wire connectors are your best choice. On this site you will find a large reference to the many different types of wire connectors such as the banana plug connector which started this site all the way down to an rf connector.
There are many types of electrical connectors such as:
Terminal blocks or wire terminals which connect individual wires and usually use a screw to press the wire to the connector.
Plug and socket connectors that use a male and female connector like the banana plug, and are very good at what they need to do.
D-Sub Connectors which stand for D-Subminature and is mainly used in computers although they are being phased out over time due to the success of the USB connector.
There are many more ways of connecting wire for a complete list have a look at our guide to connections. You amy also need a crimp tool. Crimp tools are designed to make it easy to connect a wire to a connector.
