A Banana Plug is a male connector most commonly used in the electrical and audio fields. It has a pin that is usually about an inch long and is close to a quarter of an inch thick. The pin has a metallic spring built into it that pushes it up against the female jack for a secure connection. You can see the photo to get a better idea of how the pin and spring system works. This photo is of a connector from my digital voltmeter and has a very snug fit when plugged in to its female jack.

See how the metal pin is split into four? This is how the pin has a spring effect and can hold itself inside the female jack. This useful feature is what makes this connector far more useful over just clamping your wires into a wire holding clamp. There is also less chance of corrosion.
Keep checking back for more additions to our definition page. We are growing our inventory of informational articles on electrical equipment, laptops, computers and PDA's. Please contact us if you have something worthwhile to contribute. We are also looking for schematics that show how to connect the wires to the connectors. If you have a schematic you would like us to use for this then send it in or drop us a note.
